Handmade Birthday Party Decor

Jonah's bday display

My daughter Tiffany (handydandyhelper.blogspot.com) recently hosted a home birthday party for my grandson Jonah's first birthday complete with handmade birthday party decor.  Today, I'm sharing this darling birthday banner she made for him (the chicken wire panel was a gift from my dear friend and team member Jamie Sanchez) which was the focal point of the party decor.  She added the Golden Book Poky Little Puppy to the panel since this was her party theme as well as the little sign from the story which was the theme for her party food.

Home birthday parties are the parties I grew up with and then employed with my own children.  This was largely brought about as a result of shoestring budgets.  But home birthday parties are not only making a comeback right now, they seem to be all the rage.  New moms are discovering the joys of creating your own birthday parties where the sky is the limit…at least where creativity is concerned.  Most of us have budgets–large or small–that have to be adhered to.  But choosing a theme and running with it is lots of fun for those of us creating all the stuff and for our party guests!

My daughter Tiffany has a great blog:  http://handydandyhelper.blogspot.com.  I subscribe to it as she is a great blogger and I don't want to miss anything!  Full details for her home birthday party featuring the Golden Books Poky Little Puppy theme are here.

Poky Little PuppyCarrying through the Poky Little Puppy theme (what an appropriate theme for any cute little boy's party!) to the birthday party food, Tiffany made the desserts mentioned in the story…served in baby food jars.  I loved it!  Not only were the desserts all homemade and wonderful, they were the perfect size for kids and adults.  She filled the baby food jars half full and added a dollop of whipped cream.  Yum!  That size was perfect for the children as well as adults who were a) watching their weight and therefore their portion size or b) wanting to try them all:)  Read the story for complete details!  The spread included ala Poky Little Puppy:

  • Rice Pudding
  • Chocolate Custard
  • Strawberry Shortcake

The Poky Little Puppy is a classic story originally published in 1942 and written by Texas author Janette Sebring Lawrey.  It was part of the original series of 12 Golden Books and is a true classic with a timeless story and gorgeous illustrations that still appeal to children.  It teaches the importance of little ones obeying mom's instructions and the rewards of obedience.  I think every kid needs this book!

Tiffany's birthday banner was made with the Big Shot, Perfect Pennants Die, Typeset Alphabet Dies, and Designer Series Paper.  She plans to create a series of pennants with Olivia's name so she can reuse the birthday banner at Livy's next party.  By swapping out Jonah's name with Livy's, she can reuse her birthday banner.  With her fun, gender neutral color scheme, this birthday banner will get plenty of use.  That's another way to save time and money with handmade birthday party decor.  You can build on your stash each year, adding more pieces and props for birthday party fun.  Handmade, heartfelt…and so much fun:)
